The Spirit series has a special place among Longines' 2020 innovations. The collection, created from scratch, includes every detail required for a modern pilot watch, while also preserving the genes from the brand's aviation heritage.
Among the watches here, the model that only shows the time has two different case diameters, 42mm, and 40mm. The front side of the case has a sapphire crystal and, right beneath it is the ultra-legible matte black dial. Thanks to the Super-LumiNOVA applied Arabic numeral indices and hands on the dial, legibility under dark is also excellent. The dial features the winged Longines logo on the upper half while the 5 stars logo, the symbol of perfection, and the Chronometer inscriptions are at the lower half. My only criticism about the dial is the date window at 3 o'clock position. In the 40mm version, there is only the date window is in this area. In the 42mm version, on the other hand, there is a part of the 3 o'clock marker takes place near the same date window, due to the increased dimensions. Yes, the date is a very useful complication, but I think the fully indexed and non-dated version of the same watch will look much more balanced to the eye. Longines Spirit, which is available with brown leather and NATO straps as well as stainless steel bracelet options, has 18 variations in two different case diameters and three different dial colors.
Another remarkable member of the same model family is the Longines Spirit Chronograph model. The Spirit Chronograph series comes with a stainless steel case option that is available with a diameter of only 42mm. The space required to fit the automatic chronograph movement caused the case to grow. Therefore, the model ensures a sportier and bolder presence on the wrist. The case is equipped with a sapphire crystal and is water-resistant to 100 meters.
As expected from a chronograph, the dial of the watch features sporty details. The Tri-Compax chronograph dial has sub-seconds at 9 o'clock, the hour counter at 6 o'clock, and the minute counter at 3 o'clock. Please note that a chronograph watch has an integrated chronograph feature if the second's hand for the hour is at 6 or 9. The manufacture automatic Caliber L688.4 is one of the most successful versions of integrated chronographs.
Longines, a member of the Swatch Group, has achieved remarkable success, especially in movement production, supported by ETA, which is also a group company of the giant manufacturer. Caliber L688.4, based on the Valjoux 775X chronograph calibers known as watchmaking legends for many years, is a cutting-edge technology movement. The 30mm diameter caliber has 27 jewels, beats at 28800vph, and offers a 54-hour power reserve. Caliber L688.4, which hosts a column-wheel chronograph function, is also Chronometer certified.
The Longines Spirit Chronograph is available with a stainless steel bracelet secured by a double-sided folding clasp. Of course, the bracelet offers sporty and bold accents, just like the other components involved in the design of the watch. If you wish, there is also a version with a dark blue leather strap.
