Panerai Jupiterium Planetarium

At Watches and Wonders Geneva 2025, Panerai introduces the Jupiterium, a planetarium clock that showcases advanced mechanical complexity and innovation. This remarkable creation is inspired by Galileo Galilei's groundbreaking discoveries and Panerai's legacy of continuous technical advancement. The Jupiterium, measuring 75 cm in width, 86 cm in height, and weighing approximately 110 kg, replicates the celestial movements that Galileo observed with his telescope in 1610, marking a pivotal moment in astronomical history.

Galileo's discovery that Earth is not the center of the universe challenged centuries-old beliefs. He observed Jupiter’s four largest moons—Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto—revolutionizing our understanding of the cosmos. Panerai’s Jupiterium recreates this geocentric view, placing Earth at the center and depicting the Sun, Moon, Jupiter, and its moons in real-time motion.

The clock’s manual-winding mechanism is powered by eight barrels, each with a 4-meter-long spring, contributing to its impressive 40-day power reserve. The clock displays the perpetual calendar with the day, date, month, and year, requiring no adjustment until 2099. This sophisticated movement ensures the clock’s precise operation, making it a truly remarkable piece of horology.

With its dual hemispheres, the Jupiterium completes one full rotation every 23 hours, 56 minutes, and 4 seconds, mimicking a sidereal day. The clock's design reflects Italy’s heritage, with the country prominently positioned on the Earth model, as viewed from Galileo’s perspective. The retrograde function, simulating the apparent backward motion of planets like Jupiter, is achieved through a patented system, adding technical sophistication and astronomical realism.

Panerai’s Jupiterium is encased in a glass box on a mahogany base, and the dial is set beneath the celestial display. The clock’s dial features long stick hour markers, luminescent Arabic numerals, and an AM/PM indicator, ensuring readability in low light. This masterpiece combines Panerai’s technical innovations with a striking architectural design, inviting observers to marvel at the universe’s mysteries.
