Cartier Privé Reinvents the Tank à Guichets Watch

Cartier continuously redefines the boundaries of luxury watchmaking. Through a dynamic combination of craftsmanship and bold creativity, the Maison pushes the limits of design with each collection. The Tank à Guichets watch is a perfect example of this reinvention, blending technology with elegance to offer a unique approach to time-telling.

First introduced in 1928, the Tank à Guichets combines a digital time display with Cartier’s signature watchmaking craftsmanship. This timepiece does not feature traditional hands; instead, it presents time through two apertures, one for the hour and one for the minute. With its clean lines and minimalistic design, it represents Cartier's dedication to both technical precision and aesthetic refinement.

The Tank collection, first drawn in 1917, evolved with the needs of modern life. As cars and trains made speed a daily necessity, Cartier responded with designs that prioritized legibility. The Tank à Guichets, which embodies modernity, first appeared as a response to the growing need for quick and easy time-reading. The simplicity of the watch, with no hands and time displayed via two windows, was a revolutionary step forward.

Throughout the decades, Cartier has released several variations of the Tank à Guichets, each with unique characteristics, including the use of different materials, case shapes, and aperture designs. A limited edition of platinum models was produced in 1997 for Cartier's 150th anniversary, and in 2005, a rose gold version returned to the Collection Privée Cartier Paris.

The new Tank à Guichets watch from Cartier Privé brings the classic 1928 design into a modern light, powered by the manual winding 9755 MC movement, which features jumping hours and dragging minutes. The case contrasts satin-finish with polished horizontal brancards, enhancing its sculptural silhouette. The first version of this watch offers the hour aperture at 12 o'clock and the minute aperture at 6 o'clock in yellow gold, rose gold, or platinum.

A second limited edition features two apertures positioned at an angle, an homage to the creative spirit of the 1930s. This version is only available in platinum, with a numbered edition of 200 pieces. The refined design, paired with luxurious materials, solidifies the Tank à Guichets as one of Cartier's most iconic timepieces.
