Min. ReadIWC's 2024 focus was on its iconic Portugieser collection, known for its elegance and timeless design. The highlight was the Portugieser Eternal Calendar, a perpetual calendar that made it onto the list of the year's best watches. At Watches & Wonders 2024, IWC introduced updated versions of this collection, including new color options for the chronograph, refreshed QPs, and redesigned 40mm and 42mm Automatic models. A classic gold case with a silver dial, the epitome of elegance, was notably absent until IWC introduced these beautiful red gold versions of the 40mm IW3584 and the 42mm IW5017.
The updates for these models were subtle but impactful. The cases received slight modifications with slimmer middle cases and box-shaped crystals front and back, enhancing the overall slender profile. The Portugieser 40 Automatic, launched in 2020, saw its dimensions remain unchanged at 40.4mm x 12.4mm, but with a refined construction and the introduction of vibrant colors like Horizon Blue and Obsidian Black.
The larger Portugieser 42 Automatic also underwent similar updates. Known for its expansive dial with sub-seconds and a power reserve indicator, this watch now features a revised case with domed crystals, contributing to a more elegant silhouette. The movement also received an upgrade, from the calibre 52010 to the new calibre 50211, which offers enhanced magnetic protection. Color options for the 42mm model include Horizon Blue, Dune, Obsidian Black, Silver, and Deep Blue.
IWC also returned to its roots with the introduction of red gold models paired with silver dials, applied markers, and matching leaf-shaped hands. The 40mm version features a no-date, small seconds layout, while the 42mm model includes a date, small seconds, and a power reserve indicator. Both are fitted with brown Santoni alligator leather straps, with the 40mm version secured by a pin buckle and the 42mm model using a folding clasp.
