In an impressive leap for horology, Grand Seiko has unveiled a groundbreaking movement at Watches and Wonders, achieving a level of accuracy that is beyond what most watch enthusiasts can even fathom. The new Ultra-Fine Accuracy Caliber 9RB2 boasts an extraordinary precision of ±20 seconds per year. This remarkable movement, which fits into a compact 30mm x 5.02mm package, offers an impressive 72-hour power reserve, setting a new standard for watches powered by a mainspring.

The brand introduced this innovative movement in two distinct models: the SLGB001, a limited edition of just 80 pieces in platinum, and the more accessible SLGB003, featuring a brilliant-hard titanium case and bracelet. The SLGB003, in particular, brings with it a significant first for Grand Seiko – a toolless three-step micro-adjustment system, providing a 6mm adjustment to the bracelet for enhanced comfort. While the bracelet lacks the tapered design that is popular with many other luxury brands (measuring 20mm to 18mm), it addresses a long-requested feature that fans have eagerly anticipated.

Both models feature stunning icy-blue dials, with the platinum version showcasing a slightly darker hue. The texture of the dials is inspired by the frost-covered trees in the Kirigamine Highlands, the home of Grand Seiko’s Shinshu Watch Studio. A herringbone-like pattern is employed to capture the unique beauty of these landscapes. Both the SLGB001 and SLGB003 have a 37mm diameter and a thickness of 11.4mm, making them ideal for a wide range of wrist sizes, while maintaining a robust 100m water resistance rating.

While the size of the watches may feel a bit on the smaller side for some, Grand Seiko has chosen to launch these models as a demonstration of the versatility of the new 9RB2 movement. Both models benefit from Grand Seiko’s iconic Zaratsu polishing and other top-tier finishes, which continue to showcase the brand’s dedication to craftsmanship and attention to detail.

The platinum SLGB001 will be available exclusively at Grand Seiko boutiques in an 80-piece limited edition, while the brilliant-hard titanium SLGB003 will be available without limitation, making it an excellent option for those eager to experience this innovative movement without the constraints of a limited run.
